Preserving Pennsylvania’s Past for Future Generations: Susquehanna National Heritage Area’s Commitment to History
The Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA), a regional nonprofit and one of America’s 62 designated National Heritage Areas, is rooted in a powerful mission to connect people to the nationally significant places and stories of York and Lancaster counties. Since its designations as a Pennsylvania Heritage Area in 2001 and a National Heritage Area in 2019, SNHA has brought together partners across local, state and national levels to celebrate the culture, history and scenic landscapes of the Susquehanna River region.
Through SNHA’s programs and facilities – such as the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, Colombia Crossing River Trails Center and River Discovery Boat tours – residents and visitors can explore the natural beauty and rich tapestry of history. Currently, SNHA’s most transformative project is taking shape, thanks to the vision and support of the Powder Mill Foundation.
In 2023, SNHA preserved the 87-acre Mifflin Farm property in Wrightsville and Hellam Township, which was nearly lost to warehouse development. At the heart of the historic site is a stone home that once offered refuge to countless freedom seekers escaping slavery in the early 19th century. Without quick action and support from organizations like the Powder Mill Foundation, this piece of American history could have been gone forever.
Now, this land is assured to become the Susquehanna Discovery Center & Heritage Park, a visitor destination and gateway to the broader heritage area. The Powder Mill Foundation’s early and continued support has been vital to realizing this vision. The new center will welcome guests into a place of learning, reflection and exploration where stories of freedom, resilience and community come alive through art, trails, storytelling and more.
Throughout our planning process, the Powder Mill Foundation and CEO, Michael Hady, have been a guiding partner by providing time, insight and encouragement as we bring this ambitious project to life. We look forward to continuing this partnership in the years ahead, knowing that our shared commitment to heritage and community will shape something truly meaningful.

SNHA’s preservation and thoughtful development creates a destination that honors the past while inspiring a more connected and inclusive future.
As one of our founding board members, Louis Appell, Jr. saw great potential in conserving our area’s most important cultural and natural resources. He believed that York and Lancaster could be stronger together by uniting in heritage, outdoor recreation and tourism. I think Mr. Appell would be proud to know that the Susquehanna Discovery Center project will bring history, art, nature and community together at one world-class site, here in York County.

Thanks to the Powder Mill Foundation, SNHA is consistently working to preserve historic land and the important stories that continue to shape the American dream.
