Promoting Dignity for All While Empowering Women and Battling Racism
Striving for a society where peace, freedom and dignity are accessible to everyone, it is crucial to provide a safe space for women who are encountering racism, abuse, or homelessness. For 133 years, YWCA York has been dedicated to supporting victims by offering a range of services from health and aquatics programs to childcare for children ages six weeks to 12 years.
Since 1891, YWCA York has been leading change by extending its support to those affected by domestic abuse, sexual assault, and human trafficking. With a core mission centered on eliminating racism, empowering women, and strengthening families, the organization has made significant progress toward its goals. Additionally, through childcare and summer camp programs, YWCA provides a nurturing environment with outdoor and educational experiences for disadvantaged youths.
The longstanding support of Louis Appell, Jr. and his family has been instrumental in sustaining YWCA York’s impactful mission.
We know that Mr. Appell would only continue to be proud to support YWCA York. He was most fond of our mission in creating a lasting, sustainable impact in York
C. Kim Bracey, Chief executive Officer
Thanks to Powder Mill Foundation’s generous support, YWCA York has received important resources such as Scholastic E-Sports Youth Programs, the School Aged Child Care (SACC) School Year Swim Program, website and account software upgrades, an updated strategic business plan, marketing materials, artistic facility upgrades, and intranet upgrades.
YWCA is unwavering in its support of racial and gender equity. Understanding that violence is a public health epidemic with no socioeconomic or geographic boundaries, YWCA works to help victims of abuse achieve safety and self-reliance while empowering the rest of the community to prevent and respond effectively to violent crimes. With community engagement initiatives like deep discussions and a racial justice committee, the group fights to end racism.
For families, the YWCA provides 227 acres of property to more than 180 participants to engage in a summer camp program featuring activities such as archery, swimming, sports, arts and crafts, and STEM activities. Additionally, they conduct racial and gender equity programs to engage the community with an intersectional approach and mindfulness techniques.
The partnership between Powder Mill Foundation and YWCA York has provided valuable support to the organization’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women in York.
We are grateful for the tremendous partnership and support of The Powder Mill Foundation. Our interagency enhancements will continue to enable us to empower some of York’s most vulnerable populations by being a beacon of light and hope, the very tenets of strength to carry on the ideals and will of Mr. Appell for our York.
