Imagine the impact we can have if we all work together!
Louis J. Appell, Jr. cared deeply for the City of York and about its ongoing vibrancy. His life touched many people. Preferring to work behind the scenes, Mr. Appell’s quiet leadership, extraordinary vision, and humble generosity were well-known in many circles, if not often publicly celebrated in his lifetime. But he was also kind and generous with his time and mentored many in the community. Mr. Appell was philanthropic and encouraged his employees of the Susquehanna Pfaltzgraff Co. to do the same. He inspired many others to invest in the City and support the strong contingent of non-profits that enrich so many lives.
Mr. Appell had a master plan for York. He believed deeply in revitalizing York’s downtown core, restoring its older historic buildings, helping non-profits do meaningful work, strengthening the cities surrounding neighborhoods, and promoting smart growth, sustainability, and preservation. And by establishing the Powder Mill Foundation in 1993, he wanted to ensure that York could continue to grow and that the Foundation could always be part of that growth.
“We are blessed that he had a vision for the City of York and blessed that he left us the resources to continue its revitalization.”
Michael Hady, President and CEO
Today, the Powder Mill Foundation supports effective collaboration between community partners and non-profits to produce vital and authentic urban experiences that are attractive to residents and businesses.
