Supporting Underserved Students Honors Appell Legacy
Honoring the humanity and dignity of every member of the school community is at the heart of York Country Day School’s mission.
York Country Day School (YCDS) is an independent college preparatory school focused on inspiring and nurturing the innovative and creative spirit of students as they pursue their education and prepare for life after graduation.
Critical to the success of YCDS is the school’s commitment to educational equity. Teachers and staff work diligently to ensure they provide a center of learning that embraces and celebrates the unique qualities of each student, including their racial backgrounds, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and sexual orientation.
This makes the incredible support of the Powder Mill Foundation even more meaningful. The Foundation’s Scholars Program provides tuition assistance to students most in need so they may begin their education journey at York Country Day School. The program will support students of color from York City and York County with academic potential and low-income backgrounds.
Helping to promote educational opportunities was an important part of Louis Appell, Jr.’s philanthropic efforts.
It is an honor to continue and to further the Appells’ advocacy of a YCDS education for the children of York City and York County. The tremendous generosity of the Powder Mill Foundation provides opportunities for students to access a transformative education to lead lives of high purpose and intellectual engagement.
Christine Heine, Head of School
