Children’s Home of York

A Legacy of Care: Nurturing York’s Youth for a Better Future

Every child deserves not just care, but a nurturing sanctuary to thrive. Children’s Home of York stands as a beacon of support, offering an array of services ranging from preventive measures to foster care, adoption, psychiatric residential treatment, independent living group homes and a partial hospitalization program.

With roots dating back to its founding in 1865 as an orphanage for children who lost their parents in the Civil War, Children’s Home of York (CHOY) has evolved into what is today a cornerstone of social service in Pennsylvania. Catering to the state’s most vulnerable children, youth, and families, its three residential programs provide unwavering supervision and guidance, empowering residents with the skills needed to thrive within their communities.

Central to its mission, CHOY’s adoption and foster care initiatives seek out the most suitable individuals to serve as foster or adoptive parents, also known as “Resource Parents.” These dedicated caregivers play a pivotal role in helping children navigate and heal from the traumas that led them into foster care, offering them love and secure refuge.

Louis Appell, Jr., was a dedicated supporter of groups that help children, and the Powder Mill Foundation has consistently supported Children’s Home of York over the years.

I believe Mr. Appell would be thrilled to know his legacy endures given his commitment to the children of York. His wife, Josephine Appell, was a member of our Board of Lady Managers and is a direct descendent of Samuel Small Jr., our 1865 founder.
Ron Bunce, President & CEO

CHOY tailors its programs to meet the individual needs of young people, offering specialized residential programs such as one designed for young males. Residents receive personalized attention, essential life skills, and hands-on training guided by Sanctuary® principles, all aimed at fostering independence and positive behaviors to prepare them effectively for adulthood. Additionally, therapy and treatment plans are available for children ages 6-18 who suffer from severe psychiatric symptoms and emotional disturbances. Supporting this work was a top priority for Mr. and Mrs. Appell.

The Powder Mill Foundation has provided invaluable support of various projects and needs over the years to Children’s Home of York. Together, we work to build a stronger, more resilient York community for all to prosper.
