Building Independence, Unlocking New Opportunities
Each adult with intellectual and developmental disabilities has unique aspirations and Penn-Mar Human Services wants to help them reach their individual goals. With a person-centered model, Penn-Mar supports members of the community in securing a job, building independence, or developing new relationships.
Founded in 1981, Penn-Mar was the vision of 12 families who wanted their adult children with disabilities to thrive. Since then, Penn-Mar has grown substantially, supporting more than 500 adults with disabilities through an array of customizable services and supports daily. Low-Intensity Support Services are also offered to an additional 2,000 people throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland.
With the help of the Powder Mill Foundation, Penn-Mar will continue motivating its families to Live Courageously. The Foundation contributions will be used to build out the newest Penn-Mar location, Far Hills. With this renovation, the administrative, operational, and service-delivery locations will be centralized, allowing Penn-Mar to cut costs and put more funds into its support programs.
Penn-Mar’s mission to promote the ability for any individual to live a life of their choosing follows Louis J. Appell, Jr.’s legacy of investing in York and its citizens.
Working with the Powder Mill Foundation is an honor and privilege. I believe Mr. Appell would be thrilled to see today’s vibrant York community, the impact the Foundation has on countless organizations, and how PMF has so effectively partnered with nonprofits and community members to further enhance the region.
Mr. Appell would be proud of PMF’s integral role in creating a space that truly meets the needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community, and excited for the impact it will have on the people we support, their families, and our team members.
