Preserving and Evolving York’s Artistic and Cultural Heritage
For more than 20 years, the Cultural Alliance of York County (CAYC) has strived to fuel the creative energy and vibrancy of the York community through leadership, collaboration, and sustainability in order to enrich the quality of life for York’s citizens.
Each year, the CAYC raises and distributes funding to support essential arts programs, cultural organizations and artists throughout the surrounding counties. To date, the organization’s efforts have benefited the lives of more than 75,000 children and impacted nearly 287,000 people around York.
By using the United Arts Fund model of raising funds through an annual campaign, the CAYC provides flexible, general operating support dollars to allow arts organizations of all shapes and sizes to deliver on their missions, impact their communities and connect with York County residents and visitors.
Supporting the Cultural Alliance of York County’s mission and core values was something Louis Appell, Jr. was passionate about. He believed York is simply not itself without the abundance of arts and culture it offers to residents and visitors alike.
This made the preservation and immersion of art in the York community a priority for Mr. Appell and the Powder Mill Foundation. The Powder Mill Foundation has invested in the CAYC’s annual campaign, offering contributions to help local arts and cultural organizations advance programs and cultivate new donors.
The Powder Mill Foundation is more than an investor in our arts and culture community; it is a cheerleader, visionary, collaborator and connector of the arts to York’s revitalization and growth.

Funding through the CAYC enhances education to community residents of all ages. This support helps cover everything from classes and field trips for students and adults in performance centers and historical sites to in-school residencies with artists teaching core curriculum and free hands-on art programs across York City parks and downtown neighborhoods.
Mr. Appell’s father and grandfather knew cultural anchors like the Strand-Capitol theaters and York Symphony Orchestra were essential to draw and connect people to the place they called home. We are so thankful that the Powder Mill Foundation continues to carry on his legacy of investing in arts and culture for his beloved York and its residents of all ages.
