Investing In Lifelong Wellbeing in York: Byrnes Health Education’s Commitment to Prevention and Community

For over 30 years, Byrnes Health Education has been a trusted nonprofit organization in York County by helping children, families and community members grow up healthy, informed and confident.

Founded on the belief that preventive health education can change lives, Byrnes Health Education was built from the vision of Susan P. Byrnes and fueled by a community that understood the power of knowledge. What began as a local initiative quickly expanded as schools and organizations recognized the value of hands-on, research-based programs that support both academic success and lifelong wellbeing.

Through dynamic, interactive presentations in physical and mental health, safety and substance abuse prevention, Byrnes has empowered thousands of participants to make informed decisions about their bodies, health and future. The organization continues to evolve to meet emerging needs, integrating updated research into curriculum, technology and partnerships with educators and healthcare professionals to ensure every program remains relevant, engaging and impactful.

As demand for innovative and accessible health education continues to grow, maintaining safe and adaptable learning environments with modern instructional tools are essential.

Recognizing this need, the Powder Mill Foundation invested in critical upgrades to Byrnes’ facilities and technology to ensure the organization can continue delivering high-quality, impactful programs for years to come.

Thanks to the support of the Powder Mill Foundation, Byrnes Health Education was able to replace tables and chairs in its Great Hall with durable, cafeteria-style furnishings designed for year-round use. The upgraded space enhances safety, accessibility and flexibility, creating a more welcoming and efficient environment for the thousands of students and community members who participate in programs each year.

Powder Mill’s investment also made possible a comprehensive renovation of the Human Development Learning Lab, including the integration of modern technology to expand digital delivery capabilities. These enhancements elevate the overall learning experience, allowing Byrnes to deliver engaging and relevant instruction that reflects today’s educational standards and evolving community needs.

Powder Mill Foundation approaches every partnership with openness and genuine care for the community. They ask thoughtful questions, listen closely and focus on long-term impact. Their support has strengthened our ability to serve students in a safe and welcoming environment.
Annie Beck, Byrnes Health Education President and CEO
